Hyundai and Kia have agreed to pay $62.1 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging defective ZF-TRW airbag control units in certain vehicles could prevent airbags from deploying in crashes.

The case, In re: ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units Products Liability Litigation (Case No. 2:19-ml-02905-JAK), was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Current and former owners/lessees of specific Hyundai and Kia model years may be eligible for reimbursements and residual payments of up to $350.

Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible to file a claim if you:

  • Hyundai vehicles: 2011-2019 Sonata, 2011-2019 Sonata Hybrid, 2018-2023 Kona, 2022-2023 Kona N, 2019-2021 Veloster
  • Kia vehicles: 2010-2013 Forte, 2010-2013 Forte Koup, 2011-2020 Optima, 2011-2016 Optima Hybrid, 2011-2012 and 2014 Sedona
  • You must be a current or former owner or lessee who owned the vehicle as of April 14, 2025
  • Available nationwide

Reimbursement: Out-of-pocket expenses for rental cars, towing, childcare, repairs, and lost wages.

Residual payments: Up to $350 for recalled vehicles; up to $150 for unrecalled vehicles.
