Class Action Settlements for College Students in 2026
By Timo Bakker · July 6, 2026 · 4 min read
College students and recent grads are eligible for several class action settlement categories that specifically target higher-education services. Here is the guide.
Categories affecting students
- COVID tuition refunds. Many universities settled class actions over the switch to online instruction in Spring 2020. Some settlements still have open claim windows or residual funds.
- Textbook price-fixing. Publishers have paid multi-million-dollar settlements over antitrust practices. If you bought college textbooks between 2015-2020, check the directory.
- Student loan servicer settlements. Navient, Nelnet, and others have settled cases over misleading servicing practices.
- Data breaches at universities. If your school suffered a data breach while you were enrolled, class actions are typically filed.
- Career services claims. For-profit colleges have paid settlements over misrepresenting job placement rates.
Typical payouts
Student-focused settlements typically pay $50-500 per class member. Documented tuition refund claims can pay significantly more (up to full tuition depending on the settlement terms).
How to file as a student
- Use your legal name (as it appears on your enrollment records).
- If you have moved (as college students often do), use your current address for check delivery.
- Keep any tuition receipts, financial aid docs, or textbook receipts as backup for higher-tier claims.
Filter the directory for “education” or “student” to see currently-open ones.
