No-Proof Class Action Cash Payouts — What You Actually Get
Updated June 22, 2026 · 5 min read · By Class Action Buddy
Short answer: All 12 currently-open no-proof class action settlements pay in actual cash — not coupons, store credit, or vouchers. Payment methods vary: most pay via Venmo or Zelle, some via e-check sent to your email, and one (Tom's of Maine) offers a physical mailed check option for users without electronic payment apps.
Total cash payout potential if you qualify for all 12: roughly $1,200. The realistic per-household average is $200-$600/year.

Why these settlements pay cash (not coupons)
Older class action settlements sometimes paid claimants in product vouchers or coupons. Courts have grown skeptical of these:
- Class Action Fairness Act (CAFA) 2005 limits attorney fees in coupon-based settlements to actual coupon redemption, not face value. This dis-incentivizes plaintiff firms from agreeing to coupon settlements.
- Coupon redemption rates are 1-15% — most class members never use the coupons. Cash settlements have take-up rates of 30-80%.
- Courts post-Frank v. Gaos (2019) scrutinize settlements that provide low/no monetary value to class members, including coupon-heavy or cy-pres-heavy structures.
As a result, modern consumer class action settlements pay almost universally in cash. All 12 above follow this pattern.
If you don't have Venmo or Zelle
The Beef Price-Fixing settlement requires Venmo specifically — no other payment method works. For other settlements that default to Venmo/Zelle, signing up for either is free at venmo.com or zellepay.com and takes 2-3 minutes.
If you genuinely can't use electronic payment apps (some seniors, the unbanked), focus on Tom's of Maine ($7, physical check option) and Cosequin if you're in California ($150, physical check option). Joint Juice's e-check can be deposited at most banks even without Zelle/Venmo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Beef settlement require Venmo specifically?
The administrator (A.B. Data) standardized on Venmo for this case because of the high per-claimant payout ($50-$200) and the need for fast, traceable electronic distribution to 1M+ class members across 27 states. Their decision; other administrators take different approaches.
Can I get cash if I don't want my settlement paid via Venmo?
For the 8 settlements with both Venmo and Zelle options, you can usually request Zelle alternatively. For the few that default to Venmo only (Beef), you'd need to set up Venmo (free) or forfeit that specific claim.
Are settlement payments via Venmo/Zelle taxable?
Same tax treatment regardless of payment method. The taxability depends on what the settlement compensates for — not how you receive the payment. Most consumer-product no-proof payouts are non-taxable.
If I get paid via Venmo, will Venmo issue a 1099?
Only for taxable settlement amounts over $600 (per IRS 1099-K rules). Most no-proof consumer-product payouts are under $600 and aren't taxable income, so no 1099 is issued. The administrator handles tax-form issuance, not Venmo.
