Michigan’s own consumer protection law
Class actions are almost always federal or multi-state, so living in Michigan rarely decides whether you can claim from a settlement. Where it can matter is when the claim rests on Michigan’s own statute.
Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCL 445.903). It makes “unfair, unconscionable, or deceptive methods, acts, or practices” unlawful and then defines them, starting with “causing a probability of confusion or misunderstanding as to the source, sponsorship, approval” of goods. Probability, not proof: a likelihood of confusion is the trigger.
An action must be brought within six years of the practice, or one year after the last payment in the transaction, whichever is later (MCL 445.911).
