Washington’s own consumer protection law
Class actions are almost always federal or multi-state, so living in Washington rarely decides whether you can claim from a settlement. Where it can matter is when the claim rests on Washington’s own statute.
Washington Consumer Protection Act (RCW 19.86.020). “Unfair methods of competition and unfair or deceptive acts or practices in the conduct of any trade or commerce are hereby declared unlawful.” The section has read that way since 1961; the elements a private claimant must prove were built by the Washington courts on top of it rather than written into it.
A damages claim is barred unless commenced within four years of accrual (RCW 19.86.120).
